Bonfire at Williams – 2013

Bonfire at Williams

Bonfire at Williams

Towards the end of October – before the fire danger period really starts, John and Jan Williams host quite a get together to set light to a huge bonfire. With the beautiful backdrop of the Grampians, we can sit – not to closely – near a roaring bonfire that lights up the night and can be seen for many miles – or should I say kilometres.

Thanks Jan and John for another great night!!

PS Hero – Echuca

Built over 100 years ago in 1874, Hero is arguably the most luxurious paddle steamer operating on the Murray River today. Hero can cater for up to 75 passengers and is a genuine steam driven paddle steamer. The paddle steamer can be booked for corporate functions and overnight cruises.

Regardless, these old steamers provide a different atmosphere to the River Murray – just a small glimpse into the history of the past and the importance of the Murray in the transportation of goods.

Again, this was very early in the morning with the sun just starting to touch the water and the trees.

PS Adelaide – Echuca Wharf

At 6:00am it was very quiet. The sun had just started to hit the water of the River Murray and bounce onto the Paddle-steamers tied to the historic wharf at the Port of Echuca. The Wharf has many levels to cope with the varying level of the River – and as can be seen here, the water level is fairly well down despite there being plenty of rain this season.

This place has so much history attached to it. This photo was taken very close to the edge of the River Murray looking between many trees that are in this location.

Echuca Wharf

Part of the Historic Township of Echuca is the Wharf area. This area is a very popular tourist attraction. Early in the morning when there are very few people around allowed for some nice photos without people.

Although its major commodity for the Port of Echuca has changed from wool to people, Port of Echuca still operates much the same as it did in the 1860’s, with shipwrights and steam engineers providing a vital role in the Port’s operations.

But 5:45 am is just a little early!!

Emmylou - Echuca

Emmylou – Echuca

Heather and I had a nice quiet weekend in Echuca – As Heather slept in, I went for an early morning drive along the Murray River in Echuca. After taking some photos of the wharf area, a little further downstream is the Paddle-steamer Emmylou.

The P.S. Emmylou is a Murray River paddle-steamer, driven by a completely restored 1906 steam engine. She was built locally during 1980-82 in the style of the 19th century paddle-boats, and now moored at Echuca with the very few remaining paddle-steamers that were used on the River Murray. She is 30 metres long and 10 metres wide, steel hulled and timber decked.

At 6:15am in the morning, there were not a lot of people around!!
