Part of the Masada Complex was a Synagogue. The “rebels” being Jews required a building suitable for community meetings and Torah readings. It was likely to have been originally built by Herod as a stable. The Jews changed its internal structure and also included a small room for the storage of the Torah scrolls.
The Synagogue is only one of a few that have been discovered that date back to the Second Temple period.
