In Madaba, the Byzantine Church of St George is the home of the Mosaic Map. This mosaic is a map of the area of Jordan and Israel. It shows important locations of the Bible including the location of the crossing into the Promised Land, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem .
The area in the above photo that is “fenced” off is the area of the actual mosaic map. On each of the walls and pillars there are many other mosaics. They all tell a story.
Mosaics fulfilled the role that many of the stained glass windows in, what we call, older churches nowadays.
The amount of detail in each of these mosaics is incredible and shows many hours of work.
