The spray from the falls typically rises to a height of over 400 metres, and sometimes even twice as high, and is visible from up to 48 km away.

From the Victoria Falls Hotel down near the Flag Pole area, the view early morning is spectacular with the sun rising directly behind the mist with golden light refracting off the water.

Whilst staying at the Victoria Falls Hotel, a reprint of the Victoria Falls Advertiser dated Friday March 19 1920 was left in our room for us to read. There is an article included the paper about some reflections of the construction of the bridge.

The article states

“The bridge was designed by Sir Douglas Fox and Partners of London and built by the Cleveland Bridge and Engineering Company of Middleborough, at a cost of over £50,000.

Built in 1905, the bridge has a main arch span of 500 feet and the superstructure contains 1700 tons of steel. It presently carries two rail tracks but, with an increasing number of wagons and the occasional motor vehicle venturing northwards, the powers that be will have to give some thought to providing a road traffic lane on the bridge in the not too distant future.”
