The Dead Sea is about 400 metres below sea level. In this photo we were looking from the Qumran area towards Jordan. A haze in the air progressively got worse as the day progressed making quality photos difficult – but all the same, you could sit and view the vista for a considerable time. Whilst the sun was warm – the temperature was only around 28 degrees. The water level in the Dead Sea is dropping – so how much closer was the water to Qumran back in the time around the time of the first Century?
Why would the Essenes choose such a place to live. What did think about when looking over a view of the Dead Sea such as this.
