Snakes are limbless reptiles found almost everywhere except Antarctica, with more than 4,000 species worldwide. They range from the tiny Barbados thread snake to giant pythons. They are mostly non-venomous, and only a minority of species pose significant danger to humans.

Australian snakes are among the most diverse and distinctive in the world, with about 170 species of land snakes and 32 species of sea snakes. Around 100 land snake species are considered venomous, but only 12 are potentially lethal to humans.
