Wilcannia

Wilcannia surprised us after stories of trouble. We found quiet charm, beautiful historic buildings, and a peaceful vibe by the Darling River. Our free camp by the water delivered prime views of the Wilcannia Bridge. Morning walks took us past the classic Shire Office, Courthouse, Police Station, and the beautifully kept Post Office. Two days gave us time to wash and restock our caravan.

Wilcannia Accommodation Options

Our riverside free camp provided full Darling River atmosphere. For more formal stays:

  • Warrawong on the Darling: Modern cabins, grassy powered/unpowered river-front sites, amenities block, camp kitchen, and laundry. Powered from $35, unpowered from $25, bush from $20. Just 3 km east of town.
  • Victory Caravan Park: Reopened with new amenities, disabled access, free washing machines, and shaded powered sites. Costs start around $20 for a powered site and $10 for unpowered. This is the one that we camped at and found it really nice. Great view of the Darlin River and quite close to the town.

Relaxing Town Life

Wilcannia feels safe, friendly, and much more inviting than its old reputation. Plenty of places for rest, essential shopping, and relaxed riverside camping. Weather treats us kindly, with shorts and t-shirts from Mildura onwards.

Journey North: Tilpa Weir Plans

We’re heading north along the Darling River to Tilpa Weir. The Tilpa Weir Campground offers free riverside camping, big shade trees, and is perfect for fishing, walks, and birdlife. No formal facilities—bring your own water and supplies. The Tilpa pub nearby lets campers use its shower block and has hearty meals and cold drinks.

Practical Tips for Travelers

  • Wilcannia is easy for washing, shopping, and relaxing strolls.
  • Camp near the Darling early for the best bridge photos. Sunrise offers brilliant river reflections and warm light for photographing town buildings.
  • Tilpa Weir is remote: carry extra water, food, and fuel, and check roads if there’s been rain.

Other Things To Do Nearby

  • Explore Wilcannia’s heritage buildings and riverbank trails.
  • Visit Menindee Lakes and Burke & Wills historical site.
  • Call into the Tilpa pub for a meal and local stories.

Summary

Our Darling River adventure delivered relaxation, warmth, historic beauty, and authentic outback camping. We’re keen for the next stage north and more riverside nights.
