Bourke

When we cruised into Bourke NSW, the air buzzed with outback energy—especially as we rolled straight into Mitchell Caravan Park, now proudly part of G’day Parks. With the Darling River glistening nearby and big blue skies overhead, this was the road trip highlight we’d hoped for.

Bourke is the last town on the Darling River. As you head east from here, it splits at the junction of the Barwon River and the Culgoa River.

Must-Visit Attractions in Bourke NSW

We kicked off at the Back O’ Bourke Information & Exhibition Centre, diving into colourful stories and hands-on displays that bring Bourke’s wild, pioneering past to life.

Fred Hollows’ Grave: Outback Legacy

No trip felt complete without visiting Fred Hollows’ Grave, shaded by a Coolabah tree in the historic cemetery. The heartfelt memorial celebrates Fred’s legendary work in Indigenous eye health. We left inspired by both his vision and Bourke’s meaning for Australians.

The water tower mural at Anson Street blew us away with its vibrant tribute to Percy Hobson. Handprints and totems honour local talent, culture and community pride—snap those photos in the late afternoon sun for rich colours.

North Bourke Bridge: Engineering Time Capsule

Golden hour was perfect for photos by the North Bourke Bridge—the oldest moveable bridge in the country. Its timber beams and river views connect visitors to the glory days of riverboat trade.

PV Jandra Paddleboat Cruise

There is the PV Jandra paddle steamer cruise, drifting along the Darling as guides sharing bush legends and wildlife tales under the lingering sunset. We dd not do this cruise – restricted by the time that we had.

Main Street Adventure

Our stroll through Bourke’s main street revealed historic pubs, colourful shopfronts, and stories from the original Port of Bourke to the quirky Afghan mosque.

Crossley Engine

Crossley Engine Display in Bourke dazzled us with serious engineering history, thumping action, and genuine outback hospitality. Watching the start-up and shutdown gave us a real sense of vintage power, punctuated by knowledgeable volunteers who enthusiastically explained every detail. Accommodation: Mitchell Caravan Park

Staying at Mitchell Caravan Park made our trip easy and memorable. This G’day Park gem brings lush gardens, clean upgraded amenities, and powered sites from around $45 per night. Then the discount for G’day membership applies. We enjoyed the new pool, undercover camp kitchen, walk-in aviary, and plenty of grassy BBQ and picnic spots. Friendly owners and hosts added personal touches—happy hour by the fire. The park is pet-friendly, with roomy drive-through ensuite sites, a great location close to town, and a genuine sense of country hospitality.

Personal Experiences and Local Highlights

Mishael and Hamish made friends around our site while we chatted with fellow travellers at happy hour. Sunrise over the river delivered magic colors, and bakery aromas from town tempted us each morning. There’s just so much heart in this remote community.

Extra Things to Do

We cooled off at the War Memorial Pool, spotted Aboriginal heritage sites, and cruised part of the Darling River Run. Every adventure started and ended with a cheerful “welcome back” at our caravan base.

Practical Tips

Dependant on the time of year, you need to book caravan sites early—Bourke gets busy! Pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and protect your gear from outback dust. The park laundry and camp kitchen make long stays easy. For the best snaps, explore the water tower mural and bridge at sunrise or sunset.

Photographic Tips

Bring wide-angle lenses for sunrise river views, afternoon colours on murals, and the historic bridge at dusk. Capture candid shots around happy hour fires and the unique outback wildlife.

Summary

Staying at Mitchell Caravan Park in Bourke gave us comfort, friendly faces, and close access to all the adventure and culture this outback town offers. We left with full hearts, real memories, and a newfound love for this vibrant slice of Australia.
