Its name comes from its proximity to large deposits of iron ore, most notably Iron Monarch, which prominently outcrops from the relatively flat surrounding landscape. This town has played a significant role in the development of Australia’s steel industry.
The Rise and Fall of Mining
The iron mine in Iron Knob was initially closed in 1998 but saw a resurgence when it reopened in 2013. This reopening brought new life to the town, although the influence of BHP, which originally developed the mining operations, is still very much present.
A Hot and Quiet Visit
When we visited Iron Knob, it was a particularly hot day, and there were very few people around. The heat added to the sense of isolation and quiet that characterizes this historic town. Despite the sparse population, the remnants of its bustling past are evident in the infrastructure and the ongoing mining activities.

Iron Knob’s iron ore is of such high quality that it led to the development of the Australian steel industry. The town supplied iron to major steelworks in Newcastle, Port Kembla, and Whyalla, and even contributed to the construction of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The iron ore from Iron Knob was also exported internationally, including to the Netherlands, the United States, Germany, and Japan.
