Journey to St Helens
Heather and I were traveling in an easterly direction towards St Helens. Just after passing through Derby, we were in for a delightful surprise seeing the Trout Rock Art just outside of Derby.
The Trout Rock Art
Looking to the right (south), we spotted an interesting piece of rock art—painted to look like the head of a Trout. This clever and artistic creation added a unique touch to our journey.

Discovering Derby, Tasmania
A Rich History
Derby is a historic town located in north-east Tasmania, situated at the confluence of the Cascade and Ringarooma Rivers. Established in the 1870s during Tasmania’s mining boom, Derby flourished as a hub for tin mining and timber milling. At its peak in the late 19th century, the town’s population exceeded 3,000, with the Briseis Mine producing significant quantities of tin.

Derby still retains its historic charm, with miners’ cottages lining the streets and landmarks like the rebuilt Cascade Dam and the imposing Mt Paris Dam. The town’s rich history is complemented by its modern appeal as a mountain biking haven, offering a blend of adventure and heritage.
