The Batman Bridge is a contemporary road bridge that spans the Tamar River. It links Whirlpool Reach, Hillwood on the east, and Sidmouth/Deviot at the midpoint on the west, in northern Tasmania. The bridge connects the Batman Highway to the West Tamar Highway (state route A7) and the East Tamar Highway (state route A8). Therefore, it is a crucial link for travellers in the region.
Design and Construction
Built between 1966 and 1968, the Batman Bridge was the first cable-stayed bridge in Australia. It was also among the first in the world. The main span is 206 metres long, suspended from a 91-metre-high steel A-frame tower. The bridge’s total length is 432 metres, and it features a deck width of 10.3 metres. The tower is situated on the west bank of the Tamar River, on a solid dolerite rock base. This base supports the majority of the bridge’s weight.
A Tribute to John Batman
The bridge is named in honour of John Batman, a businessman from Launceston and a founding figure of Melbourne. Overlooking the Deviot Sailing Club, the Batman Bridge not only serves a practical purpose but also stands as a tribute to Batman’s contributions to the region.
