Today, the railway may no longer run. However, the town’s heritage has been lovingly preserved, earning it a spot on the South Australian Heritage Register.

MacArthur’s Famous Words
Terowie holds a special place in wartime history thanks to General Douglas MacArthur. In 1942, during World War II, MacArthur stopped in Terowie while en route to Adelaide after evacuating the Philippines. It was here that he famously declared, “I came out of Bataan and I shall return.” This momentous statement is commemorated with a plaque and interpretive signage at the site. Thus, making it a significant stop for history enthusiasts. Discovering this aspect of Terowie’s past can be both enlightening and inspiring.
Our Visit
We were only traveling through Terowie on our way to Peterborough. Ther is a great Entry sign to the Town in the form of a train. Mishael really enjoyed climbing to sit alongside the train called “Jupiter”.
A quick drive around the town showed the wonderful buildings and begs to be explored.
This is definitely on our list to do when we are next in the area.
