From Fires to Serenity: Our Journey to Hopetoun, Western Australia
Leaving Munglinup Beach
Our adventure took an unexpected turn when we had to leave the Munglinup Beach Campsite due to fires caused by lightning strikes. It was a sudden change of plans, but safety comes first. We quickly packed our things and decided to take the back roads to our next destination—Hopetoun.
The Drive to Hopetoun
The day was scorching hot, but the coolness of the car provided much-needed relief. As we drove along the road, we could see the fires in the distance, a stark reminder of nature’s power. Despite the heat and the sight of the fires, the drive was quite scenic, and we made the most of it.
Arriving at Hopetoun
Hopetoun is a charming town located on the south coast of Western Australia. It’s under four hours east of Albany and about two hours west of Esperance. We arrived at the Hopetoun 48-hour RV Rest Stop, a convenient and welcoming spot for travelers like us. The rest stop is well-suited for self-contained RVs, offering a flat, grassy area close to the beach and just a short walk from the town.
Settling In
After the intense drive, it was a relief to settle in at the rest stop. The area is peaceful and provided the perfect setting to unwind after a hectic day. We took a moment to appreciate the tranquility and the beauty of our surroundings.
Exploring Hopetoun
Hopetoun itself is a lovely town with everything you need within walking distance. From the pristine beaches to the quaint local shops, it’s a place that invites you to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. The proximity to the beach and the town made it easy to explore and relax.
Our journey to Hopetoun, though unexpected, turned out to be a memorable part of our travels. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences come from the unplanned moments.
A short walk over the dunes you are greeted by a beautiful bay – people walking and fishing (and not catching anything).
Although a long distance from fires, we could see smoke in the air as seen in this photo.
After a very hot day, this was a lovely little place – very friendly people, some great little shops and eateries.
Campsite details
The camping site is next to the road and operates on a first come first serve principle for those with fully self contained vehicles/caravans – limited to a maximum stay of 48 hours. There was no charge for using the site when we visited in 2023. The site has no amenities.
