The Life of John Shaw Neilson
John Shaw Neilson was born on February 22, 1872, in Penola, South Australia. However, his family moved to Nhill, where he spent much of his early life. Slightly built and largely untrained, Neilson worked various labor-intensive jobs throughout his life, including fruit-picking, clearing scrub, navvying, and working in quarries. In 1928, he began working as a messenger with the Country Roads Board in Melbourne.
