Karoonda’s silo art stands out as one of Australia’s most innovative and community-driven public art projects. Renowned street artist Heesco created the rural-themed mural in June-July 2019. He produced a work that celebrates Karoonda’s agricultural heritage and the spirit of the Murray Mallee region. The mural notably features local icons—Diamond the sheep and Whiskey the kelpie. These represent the area’s farming culture and beloved animals.
Day and Night Art Experience
By day, the silos dazzle with Heesco’s detailed, vibrant painting, which was his largest mural at the time. It marked a significant milestone in his career. Heesco painted through winter’s wind and rain, incorporating community feedback. This ensured the artwork resonated with locals and visitors alike.
At night, Karoonda sets itself apart as the first location in Australia to feature permanent silo projection art. Illuminart, a projection art specialist, transforms the mural with a rotating digital exhibition. This exhibition features works from South Australian and Mallee artists. The digital light show operates every night from sunset for up to three hours. It provides a dynamic new experience and fresh content for repeat visitors.
Impact and Recognition
This project has not only rejuvenated community pride but also sparked renewed tourism and economic energy for Karoonda. In 2021, the Karoonda Silo Art won Gold in the Mega Mural category and “Best of the Best” overall at the Australian Street Art Awards. The combination of paint and projection makes the attraction unique within the national silo art trail. The council regularly curates new art for projection, meaning no two nighttime visits are ever quite the same.
