As we pulled into Rawnsley Park Station, the rugged beauty of the Flinders Ranges took our breath away. This 12,000-hectare sheep station, now a premier tourism destination, offers an authentic outback experience that we couldn’t wait to dive into.

First Impressions

The moment we arrived, the friendly staff at reception made us feel right at home. We chose a powered site for our caravan, but Rawnsley Park offers various accommodation options to suit every traveller’s needs. From eco-villas to holiday units and even a bunkhouse, there’s something for everyone here at Rawnsley Park Station.

Settling In

After setting up camp, we explored the facilities. The caravan park boasts excellent amenities, including:

  • A well-stocked licensed shop
  • Refreshing swimming pools
  • A spacious camp kitchen
  • Clean laundry facilities
  • Free WiFi (a luxury in the outback!)

We particularly appreciated the fire pit areas, perfect for stargazing and sharing stories with fellow travelers at Rawnsley Park Station.

Exploring the Flinders Ranges

Rawnsley Park Station serves as an ideal base for discovering the wonders of the Flinders Ranges. We kicked off our adventure with a guided bushwalk, learning about the local flora and fauna from our knowledgeable guide. The views of Wilpena Pound, a natural amphitheater of mountains, left us in awe of nature’s artistry.

For thrill-seekers, we highly recommend the scenic helicopter flights. Soaring over the ancient landscape gave us a new perspective on the vastness and beauty of the outback and Rawnsley Park Station.

Local Attractions

During our stay, we ventured out to explore nearby attractions:

  1. Wilpena Pound.
  2. Brachina Gorge: A scenic drive through this gorge offered glimpses of yellow-footed rock wallabies.
  3. Bunyeroo Valley: The rugged beauty here made for excellent photo opportunities.
  4. Parachina Gorge and the Hotel at Parachina Township.
  5. Appealinna Hill and Wills Homestead – a massive conflict between the pastoralists and the miners.
  6. Blinman and Glass Gorge Road – Full of History
  7. Great Wall of China
  8. Stokes Hill Lookout
  9. Hucks Lookout
  10. Cazneaux Tree
  11. Pugilist Hill
  12. Moralana Scenic Drive

There is plenty to do and see – and even more than we did.

Outback Dining Experience

Mishael enjoyed playing on the Cart at the entrance to the Woolshed Restaurant.

One evening, we treated ourselves to dinner at the Woolshed Restaurant on-site. The menu showcased local produce, and we savoured every bite of our perfectly cooked kangaroo steaks while watching the sunset paint the ranges in vibrant hues around Rawnsley Park Station.

Stargazing and Night Sky Tours

The clear, unpolluted skies of the Flinders Ranges offer spectacular stargazing opportunities. We joined a night sky tour at Rawnsley Park Station, where an astronomer guided us through the constellations visible in the Southern Hemisphere. The Milky Way stretched across the sky like a river of stars – a sight we’ll never forget.

Tips for Future Visitors

  1. Book in advance, especially during peak season (May to October).
  2. Bring layers – temperatures can vary greatly between day and night.
  3. Don’t miss the sunrise over Rawnsley Bluff – it’s worth the early wake-up call at Rawnsley Park Station.
  4. Take advantage of the knowledgeable staff for activity recommendations.
  5. Remember to purchase a Parks SA pass if you plan to explore Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park.
