Pooginook Lookout: A Scenic and Informative Stop

Stunning Views Over the River Murray

Pooginook Lookout, located near the Waikerie Silos, is a fantastic spot to take in the breathtaking views over the River Murray. This clifftop position offers a panoramic perspective of the river and its surrounding landscapes. It’s a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through the area.

A Community Effort

Kudos to the Rotary Club of Waikerie for their excellent work in presenting this area. The lookout is well-maintained and provides valuable information about the region, enhancing the visitor experience. The Rotary Club’s efforts have transformed this spot into a welcoming and educational destination.

The Waikerie Rotary Cliff Top Walk

Adjacent to Pooginook Lookout is the Waikerie Rotary Cliff Top Walk. This two-kilometer trail stretches eastwards from the Waikerie ferry, through the pumping station grounds, to the lookout. The picturesque walk offers multiple lookout points along the trail. These points provide fantastic views over the River Murray and the meandering floodplain. The height of the cliffs and the scenic vistas make this walk a highlight of the area.

Art and History

The trail also features recently completed artworks, including a kookaburra mural and metal sculptures. These artworks add an artistic touch to the natural beauty. One notable feature is the Peace Pole, erected by the Waikerie Rotary Club in 2023 as part of the global Peace Pole Project. This pole is one of 250,000 around the world, spreading the universal message of peace: “May peace prevail on Earth”.

Convenient Access

The Pooginook Lookout and the Cliff Top Walk are easily accessible, with car parking directly adjoining the silo art. This makes it convenient for visitors to stop, explore, and enjoy the stunning views and informative displays.

A Must-Visit Destination

If you find yourself near Waikerie, be sure to visit Pooginook Lookout. Take a stroll along the Waikerie Rotary Cliff Top Walk. The combination of natural beauty, artistic elements, and historical significance makes this a truly enriching experience. Well done to the Rotary Club of Waikerie for their dedication to enhancing this beautiful area.

Our visit to Pooginook Lookout was a memorable part of our journey. It offered stunning views and a deeper appreciation for the efforts of the local community. It’s a perfect spot to pause, reflect, and enjoy the beauty of the River Murray.
