Tilpa and Tilpa Weir

Tilpa and Tilpa Weir deliver true outback camping along the banks of the Darling River. We found the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming, with endless skies and riverside shade from tall gums.

Arriving in Tilpa

When we rolled into Tilpa, the sight of the muddy Darling and the old Tilpa Pub instantly set the mood for adventure. We felt the heritage, with quirky stories and rustic outback charm at every corner.

Tilpa Weir Camping

We parked the caravan at Tilpa Weir Campground—a free, pet-friendly spot right on the river. Big shade trees made it comfortable during sunny afternoons. This site suits tents, motorhomes, and large rigs. There are no facilities here; come fully prepared with water, food, and essentials.

  • No toilets, showers, or power
  • Beautiful river views and prime birdwatching
  • Free camping, but keep the area tidy for fellow travelers

Alternatives & Facilities

If we wanted a shower, the Tilpa Hotel’s paddock offered paid camping with access to the pub’s amenities (showers and meals). We had a look at this site and it didn’t have the same natural attraction as the Tilpa Weir site.

What We Loved Doing

  • Fishing for yabbies, Murray cod, and yellowbelly
  • Exploring the shortest Heritage Walk in Australia, with oddball outback stories on quirky town signs
  • Sharing a pool game and a cold drink at Tilpa Pub, while signing the legendary wall
  • Watching sunsets light up the river, with white cockatoos and pelicans overhead
  • Birdwatching, especially at dawn or evening along the banks

Outback Tips

  • Arrive with a full water tank and food stash
  • Use a 4WD or check weather before traveling; roads turn tricky when wet
  • Support the pub, buy a meal, and sign the wall for the Royal Flying Doctor Service
  • Respect local fishing rules and keep the camp clean for the next river wanderers

Photo Tips

  • Capture mirrored reflections on the Darling at sunrise
  • Snap wide-angle shots of big skies and floodplain panoramas
  • Try golden hour photos of the Tilpa Pub or the old bridge
  • Spot and photograph river birds and local wildlife

Nearby Adventures

  • Day trip to Wilcannia for heritage bridges and dramatic landscapes
  • Station stays offer more creature comforts and outback tales
