Our journey through Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary was a remarkable exploration of South Australia’s rugged outback, highlighted by an incredible encounter with the rare Yellow-footed Rock-Wallaby. Located in the northern Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola is a 610 square kilometre private sanctuary that offers adventurers an extraordinary glimpse into a pristine wilderness environment.
Wildlife Highlights: The Yellow-footed Rock-Wallaby
The Yellow-footed Rock-Wallaby was the star of our trip. These stunning marsupials are considered vulnerable and are now almost exclusively found in South Australia. Arkaroola is perhaps the best place to spot these rare creatures in their natural habitat. We were fortunate to see them jumping precisely from rock to rock, with their distinctive orange-yellow zebra-like tails standing out against the rocky landscape in Arkaroola.
Exploring the Landscape
Nooldoonooldoona Waterhole
This mysterious waterhole, located about 11 km from Arkaroola, was a highlight of our trip. According to local Adnyamathanha dreaming stories, the waterhole was created by Akurra, a powerful serpent from the dreamtime. The surrounding landscape is breathtaking, with glittering stones and a rich cultural history within Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
Station Backtrack and Stubbs Waterhole
The Station Backtrack offered us an incredible 4WD adventure through the rugged terrain. Stubbs Waterhole, surrounded by steep red hills, provided a beautiful oasis in the arid landscape. While water levels can vary with the seasons, the contrast between the opal green water and red rocks was stunning within the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
Practical Tips
- Best Time to Visit: The optimal time is in the weeks and months after rain, though Arkaroola is incredible year-round
- Wildlife Viewing: Look for yellow-orange dots in caves and on rocks, especially during rainy weather within the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary
- Vehicle Recommendation: A high-clearance or 4WD vehicle is essential for exploring the area
Accommodation
We stayed at the Caravan Park at the station, which provided a perfect base for our explorations. The heat was intense, typical of the semi-arid environment, so we were grateful for the sanctuary’s amenities.
