Eucla, the easternmost locality in Western Australia, is situated in the Goldfields-Esperance region along the Eyre Highway. It is approximately 11 kilometers west of the South Australian border. This small township serves as a gateway for travelers crossing between the two states. It offers a glimpse into the region’s rich history and natural beauty.
Scenic Lookout and Memorials
Just to the east of Eucla, a side road leads to a scenic lookout that offers stunning views of the ocean. This lookout is close to the old Telegraph Station and the Eucla Airport, making it a convenient stop for visitors. At the lookout, you’ll find the Eucla War Memorial, which honours Australian servicemen and women who have served in all wars and conflicts. The memorial consists of two granite boulders on a red marble plinth. It is flanked by two flag poles.
Honoring Edward John Eyre
Alongside the War Memorial is a tribute to Edward John Eyre, the renowned explorer who stayed in this vicinity while exploring a route from South Australia to King George Sound. Eyre’s expeditions were instrumental in mapping the Australian continent and understanding its vast landscapes. His journey across the Nullarbor Plain and along the Great Australian Bight is a testament to his endurance and pioneering spirit.
A Small but Significant Township
Eucla itself is a small township, primarily consisting of a fuel station, motel, and caravan park. With a population of only around 50 people, it offers a quiet and peaceful stop for travelers.
