Farmers would store their grain in these silos, awaiting the arrival of the trains that would transfer it to wheat trucks, destined for distant markets.
Today, the dynamics of the grain industry have shifted. With smaller rural communities facing a declining population, maintaining this type of infrastructure has become more challenging. Many farmers now opt to store their grain on-site, selling it when prices are more favorable or transporting it directly to larger facilities. Surrounded by tall trees, the building looks like an oasis amidst the vast grain-growing plains. While most properties in Sheep Hills are no longer inhabited, the pub’s structure remains in surprisingly good condition, offering a glimpse into the area’s past as a gathering place for farmers and travelers alike.
The Silo Art Trail: A Celebration of Rural Heritage
One of the most remarkable features of Sheep Hills is its contribution to the renowned Silo Art Trail. This trail, which has transformed disused grain silos into massive works of art, draws visitors from across Australia and beyond. The Sheep Hills silos, in particular, feature a stunning mural that celebrates the Indigenous heritage of the Wimmera region. The artwork, created by internationally acclaimed artist Adnate, portrays members of the local Aboriginal community, highlighting the connection between past and present.

Agriculture in Action: Preparing for the Next Crop
A common site throughout the Wimmera is the burning of stubble after the end of the High Fire Risk season. This is part of the preparation for the next years crop. Great plumes of smoke ascend into the sky and then drift creating a haze in every direction that you look. This photo was taken very close to Sheep Hills on the way to Warracknabeal.
